The Republic of Sudan is the site of ongoing civil conflict, most recently in the Darfur region, where fighting broke out in early 2003. The Darfur conflict has seen more than two-million people displaced from their homes, and an estimated 200 000 have been killed. The country's official language is Arabic, with Nubian widely spoken.
