Schools in Malawi may reopen in July, according to the national planning task force.

In a statement, task force chairperson Professor Lewis Dzimbiri said they had been meeting various stakeholders to come up with strategies and conditions for the safe reopening of schools.

"It is worth pointing out the reopening of schools, colleges and universities amidst the Covid-19 pandemic that has led to loss of lives globally, including four in Malawi, is an attempt to ensure a proper balance between the right to education and the right to life,"  he said.

He said the task force had also been looking at regional and global trends to draw lessons on how the safe reopening of schools was being managed in other countries.

"In this regard, the task force has recommended to the presidential task force on coronavirus that all schools, colleges and universities be reopened on July 13, 2020, with specific details and conditions for the reopening to be announced later after the task force has finalised the consultations."

Malawi closed it schools in March when there were still no cases of the coronavirus in the country.

The first cases were confirmed in April and the country has since recorded 369 cases, with four deaths and 51 recoveries.

President Peter Mutharika's plan to impose a lockdown in April failed after the Lilongwe High Court granted the Human Rights Defenders Coalition an order blocking the government from effecting a 21-day lockdown meant to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the south-eastern African country.

Independent newspaper The Nation reported that Dzimbiri said the task force would come up with guidelines that would be announced before the reopening of schools in the country.

"The calendar will be in such a way that the normal school calendar is not affected much. However, we are still consulting the public on how best we can tackle the challenges to ensure safety of students," he told the newspaper.

Civil Society Education Coalition director Benedicto Kondowe suggested that it would be better for schools to reopen in September to avoid changing the school calendar.
