The South African Students’ Congress (SASCO) wishes to take this opportunity to inform all its TVET College branches about the temporary suspension of the Nationwide TVET strike that has been happening since last Monday. The strike is suspended pending the outcomes of talks with government.

The organisation is entering in discussions with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) around the issues of dispute, which led to the strike and these are likely to continue for two weeks. Depending on the outcomes of these engagements, we are suspending the strike and calling on all our comrades in colleges to go back to classes.

We will be regularly updating our structures about the developments in these talks. All branches should rest assured that we would not make compromises in these discussions; all our grievances should be addressed with the necessary speed they deserve.

We want to thank all TVET College branches that participated for the vigilance, determination and outmost discipline that they demonstrated during the past week in the various protests.  The hard work displayed proves that branches are indeed the locomotives of the organisation. We urge comrades to be on high alert so that we can reactivate the protests if our talks do not bear positive results. Branches with local problems are nonetheless advised to address these using the only method that campus managers seem to hear – mass protests.
