With the recent spotlight on the 2014 matric pass rate in mathematics, not enough attention has been paid to those who passed with high marks.  Since we are providing in the needs of a very large group of learners, today’s single stream maths curriculum is definitely easier than the old Higher Grade Maths, the former benchmark for university entrance.

Content was slashed from the old curriculum:  algebra was watered down and half of the trigonometry syllabus was dropped.  Manipulative and numerical skills were downplayed and it was no longer necessary to demonstrate understanding of one of the core components of mathematical thinking: logical reasoning and proof.  Exams became easier and ever more formulaic and predictable.  Rote learning, teaching to the test, reliance on formula sheets and calculators are now standard strategies, even in the good schools. Although the new CAPS curriculum is probably the best curriculum that we have had in the country, it covers such a wide range of different topics that it is virtually impossible to develop a deep understanding of the different concepts.

Since school results no longer discriminate between very good and average students, universities have had to institute National Benchmark Tests for prospective students.  Even when they make it into university, new students may be put through a maths placement test so that they can be streamed into courses appropriate to their real ability.

“Our top learners in the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO) perform well at university.   The reason is that the type of mathematical problems that participants are faced with during each round of the SAMO is very similar to what can be expected at university level.  Exposure to competition mathematics will increase not only a learner’s chance of a distinction but also develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, which are two important skills needed to succeed at university ” says Prof Johann Engelbrecht, Executive Director of the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF).

Seventeen matriculants who participated in the Final Round of the 2014 SAMO were approached in a survey done by the SAMF.  Of these 17 learners, three obtained 9 distinctions each, eight matriculated with 8 distinctions each and two with 7 distinctions each.  Most of these top performers are now studying Engineering, Medicine or Actuarial Science.  Robin Visser, overall winner of the 2014 SAMO, is one of the Final Round participants who obtained 9 distinctions.  Robin scored 98% in mathematics and will study towards a degree in Computer Science at UCT.  Johan de Beer obtained 9 distinctions at St Albans College and will study Electrical Engineering at UP. SAMF bursary recipient Xihluke Nkuna from Giyani High School in Limpopo obtained 7 distinctions with 100% in mathematics and will study Actuarial Science at UCT.

The SAMF encourages all Grade 8 to 12 learners to reap the benefits of the SAMO by entering for the 2015 Olympiad.  The first round of the SAMO will be taking place on 12 March at each individual school.  The closing date for entries is on the 6th of February 2015.  Schools who wish to enter can contact the SAMF by telephone on 012 392 9362 or send an e-mail to info@samf.ac.za.  The entry form is also available online at www.samf.ac.za.

The SAMO is organised by the SAMF and sponsored by Liberty and the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants.
