"Last night the Southern Africa Development Community countries met to discuss this matter. A statement will be issued by the Prime Minister of Lesotho (Pakalitha Mosisili)," Mbeki told reporters in Abuja.
Earlier, Mozambique's President Joaquim Chissano told BBC television that southern African Commonwealth members had been angered by the group's decision to prolong the suspension, and would be making a joint protest.
"We are unhappy because we cannot accept these undemocratic procedures. We are going to express this as a group," he said.
President Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwean government was suspended from the Commonwealth in March last year after the veteran liberation leader was re-elected in a poll which was marred by fraud and violence.
The Commonwealth decided Sunday to prolong the sanctions indefinitely, a move which provoked Mugabe into quitting the 54-nation body altogether.
SADC is 14-member body representing most southern African countries. Eleven of the members are also in the Commonwealth, as was Zimbabwe until Sunday.
