The South African Communist Party (SACP) expresses its condolences to the Dube family for the loss of Comrade June Dube, who passed away on Thursday, 8 February 2018.

The South African trade union movement and the SACP have been affected by the death of Comrade June Dube. He was a member of the Transport and General Workers Union. The union merged together with other unions in 2000 to form the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu).

Comrade June Dube rose through the ranks of Satawu as a shop steward. He served Satawu as its First Deputy President and later as its President. He was removed as Satawu President in the midst of organisational challenges and internal differences in the aftermath of the global capitalist system crisis that first broke out in 2008 in the United States of America.

He later participated in forming the Democratic Transport Logistics and Allied Workers Union, which he was elected as its founding President. In his own right as an activist he continued to participate in the programme and activities of the SACP.

The greatest challenge facing the SACP and the entire working class of South Africa in honour of Comrade June Dube is that of building unity and ensuring successful reunification on the basis of a common programme in the interest of all workers.

The SACP is working on efforts to forge the left into a popular left front to advance a second radical phase of our struggle to complete the national democratic revolution and advance to socialism.
