The South African Communist Party (SACP) condemns the arrest and killing of peaceful protesters by the totalitarian regime of Omar al-Bashir in Sudan. The people of Sudan have been protesting against the al-Bashir regime since 19 December 2018. These are the most recent of many protests over the years calling for an end to the dictatorship. In an effort to silence the people, the regime’s security forces have already killed 22 protesters and arrested hundreds since the beginning of the latest round of protests.

As part of the repression, Comrade Fathi al-Fadl, member of the Political Bureau and official spokesperson of the Sudanese Communist Party, was arrested on Thursday 10 January 2019 in Khartoum by the security forces. There are fears for his safety and health due to the gross hostility with which the al-Bashir regime has treated the Sudanese Communist Party over the decades. The SACP is calling for the immediate release of Comrade Fathi al-Fadl and all protesters who have been arrested.

Several members of the Sudanese Communist Party Central Committee are still in detention after their arrest by the security forces during recent weeks. They include Comrade Siddig Yousif, Masoud al-Hassan, Hanadi Fadl, Kamal Karar, Sied Ahmed al-Khteeb, Tariq Abdalmagied.

The SACP is calling for an immediate and unconditional release of all of the comrades and every protestor who was arrested, as well as all political prisoners.

The SACP calls upon the working class of the world to unite in international solidarity action with the people of Sudan.

We call for a peaceful resolution of the Sudanese crisis which has caused untold pain to the people for decades.
