The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) accepts the challenge by Mr. Gwede Mantashe, ANC Secretary-General (S-G), to work with government and civil society in order to grow South Africa into an inclusive and prosperous society. Mr. Mantashe briefed the SACCI membership on economic policy issues on 21 August and was hosted by South African Breweries (SAB). The engagement with the S-G forms an important part of SACCI's continued engagement with leaders in government and civil society that helps to strengthening ties with our social partners. In this regard, SACCI is proud to announce that it will host both President Sirleaf of Liberia and President Zuma at the SACCI Annual Convention Gala Dinner on 22 October (see Sacci.org.za).

Mr. Mantashe opened the discussion by explaining that the core goal of the ANC in government is to transform South Africa into a confident and prosperous society. In this way SACCI and the Business Community in general can work with government to achieve the goal of creating a more inclusive society. “The private sector must be the architects of change,” said Mr. Mantashe. He also emphasised the need for continued engagements on policy matters. “Only when we talk to each other will we take South Africa forward.”

Mr. Mantashe also spoke about the new Ministry of Small Business, and noted that the mandate of the ministry is to ensure that SMEs become the engine for job creation. “Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) must have the right risk appetite to invest in SMEs, and the market will follow.” Reflecting on the prolonged bouts of industrial action this year, Mr. Mantashe noted that lengthy strikes achieved very little benefits to workers. He also emphasised the need to introduce a compulsory strike ballot. “When you call a strike ballot, you test the support and mobilise your members for the strike, and through this grow your membership. If you don’t want a ballot, then you are an amateur.”

SACCI will work with the office of the ANC Secretary-General towards a series of constructive engagements on improving the domestic economic climate and building a more inclusive economy.
