South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) chairperson Obert Maghuve on Thursday accused MPs of trying to bully him and fellow board members to resign, insisting he won’t be quitting his post.

“In order for me to not keep you in suspense, let the inquiry come. I’m ready for it so it means I’m going nowhere,” a defiant Maghuve said at a media briefing in Johannesburg.

Maghuve lashed out at Parliament’s portfolio committee on communications, who on Wednesday resolved to institute an inquiry into the fitness of the board to hold office after being briefed by the SABC board on its decision to appoint Hlaudi Motsoeneng to the senior post of chief executive for corporate affairs. His appointment to the new post came after the Supreme Court of Appeal would not entertain an appeal of a high court decision invalidating his appointment as chief operating officer.

Maghuve said MPs had treated him unfairly.

“To show that the members of the portfolio committee were not objective, when I was listening to their deliberations, one member of Cope said we must ensure by hook or crook that the board is dissolved. What does that mean? It means they will use whatever tactics is there, whether right or wrong, to make sure the board leaves,” he said.

“These are bullying tactics and it can’t be allowed in our country for parliamentarians to use bullying tactics.”

Maghuve also took on board members Krish Naidoo and Vusi Mavuso who during Wednesday’s meeting at Parliament dropped a bombshell by resigning, distancing themselves from controversial decisions taken by the board.
