Cabinet has agreed that a method has to be found to integrate the use of as many languages as possible within the everyday functioning of government.

Addressing the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in Parliament yesterday, President Thabo Mbeki announced that Cabinet had about four weeks ago approved the use of six different languages with some alternation, in the daily functioning of government at any particular given time.

He also urged members of the NCOP delegates to engage on the question of language.

Mbeki said the approval by Cabinet of the use of many languages was meant to implement an inclusive, multi-lingual system in government.

Government still needed to take more steps to achieve this goal, he said.

'It is incorrect to approach the matter of languages in a separate pocket in a ghetto, it (language) has to be integrated in a manner in which a society functions,' the President added. - BuaNews
