The Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture mourns the passing of veteran actor and playwright Boikie Mohlamme. His passing has robbed the performing arts industry and South Africa at large of its loved son.
“His passing comes in a month that the country celebrates its diverse heritage, and he was one of the actors that proudly used African languages to entertain South Africans. The only way to celebrate his life is to encourage equal use of all 11 official languages,” said Ms Xoliswa Tom, the Chairperson of the Committee.
As a founding member of the Creative Workers Union of SA, his generation made great strides in improving the working and living conditions of South African in the creative industry. “It is now up to the current generation of actors and role players in the industry to take up this baton to ensure that the good work he has done is not reversed,” Ms Tom emphasised.
The Committee wishes to covey its heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones and friends.
