Increased air access between Cape Town and strategic locations could create 3 950 jobs and generate R392 million for the local economy.

These are the findings of the business case used to develop the province’s Air Access strategy.

Alan Winde, Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, said the study proposed the establishment of a direct flight between Cape Town and Luanda, the capital of Angola.

“The aim of the Air Access strategy is to improve our competitiveness and we will focus on routes into Africa. Research shows a direct link between economic growth and improved air access. We are serious about investment, exports and tourism and direct routes play a major role in stimulating growth in these areas,” said Minister Winde.

In 2012, trade between South Africa and Angola was worth R31 billion. The Western Cape accounts for 45% of South Africa’s trade with Angola.

Minister Winde explained the importance of strengthening links with Angola.

“We worked with ACSA and Accelerate Cape Town to commission business cases which determined the most feasible direct routes. Angola is a strategic destination with high business and leisure tourism opportunities. There are several linkages we have with Angola. Increased direct flights will benefit our key sectors including tourism and oil and gas,” said Minister Winde.

The Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism will negotiate with the relevant airlines to establish the new additional flights.
