The Department of Labour has called on employers to abide by the freshly-amended Employment Equity Act in the interest of business and transformation in the country. This followed the signing into law by President Jacob Zuma earlier this week. The law will however kick in on 1 August 2014.
Thembinkosi Mkalipi, acting Deputy Director-General for labour market policy, said: “We urge all employers to treat transformation seriously and understand that it makes business sense to comply with the law. He said this law now introduces new measures for enforcement.’’
“It also brings new fines based on turnover and the very important concept of equal pay for work of equal value,” Mkalipi said.
