The Security Department of the University of Pretoria told witnesses of a racist incident at the Taaibos Residence that the video recordings of the security cameras at the gate, where the incident occurred, are too dark and that other cameras were out of order.

This, after a Taaibos student, Emuel Venter submitted a complaint on behalf of other Taaibos residents after two black students, on the evening of 4 September 2014, shouted that they hated and wanted to kill all white people.

TuksRes also informed the witnesses that the gate – where the unidentified culprits entered – was also out of order on that evening and that they can’t check the data.

“The excuses left us without words. The explanations of TuksRes are unfounded, as Taaibos students confirmed that they entered that gate the same evening, shortly before the incident, and that the gate was in good working condition,” Monique du Randt, Spokesperson for AfriForum Youth said.

According to AfriForum Youth, Venter submitted the complaint to the University on 5 September 2014, hoping that the two culprits would be identified so that a formal complaint could be submitted against them. Security ensured Venter that the matter would be handled accordingly.

UP Security arranged a meeting with Venter and the six other eyewitnesses. Since then, the witnesses met with Security twice and they submitted written affidavits.

“AfriForum Youth demands that this racist incident be addressed as a matter of urgency by the UP.”
