Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Dr Ismail Vadi has condemned the recent taxi violence which has led to the loss of lives in Evaton, south of Johannesburg and the killing of a taxi driver in Mamelodi on Monday.

Four people were shot dead and others injured when members of two taxi associations allegedly opened fire on each other. The reasons for the shooting is not yet known.

MEC Vadi said that there were various ways of resolving conflict without resorting to violence.

“Violence can never resolve any conflict; it is an act of criminality. Innocent lives, especially those of passengers are placed at risk. Conflict should not be at the detriment of people’s lives. We call on the Taxi Associations to exercise restraint and engage each other in finding an amicable solution to their differences,” Vadi said.

MEC Vadi further expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased during this time of grief. We would like to once again call for calm and urge those that might have information to come forward and assist law enforcement agencies.”

“The police will continue to work around the clock in bringing those responsible for the violence to book,” said Vadi.
