AfriForum today submitted a third complaint this year, the second in only one month, at the Mpumalanga Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Ntobela. This, after Thomas Opperman was attacked on his farm in Ermelo this week, and is still waiting for the South African Police Service to arrive on the scene.

Mr Opperman had to drive to the police station in Ermelo to open a case. The SAPS have still not visited the scene,” Ian Cameron, Head of Community Safety at AfriForum said.

The attackers forced Mr Opperman off the road with another vehicle, and said they will “take the white man’s bakkie”, while they were assaulting him. The attackers also made death threats against Mr Opperman’s son yesterday.

Cameron said the three attackers are also mining illegally on the Opperman farm, and that Government is refusing to take action. Some of the other illegal miners are allegedly illegal immigrants.

“The police say sector policing is implemented to safeguard rural communities, but this incident shows the exact opposite.”
