Thousands of motorists will soon enjoy a better travelling experience on the R316 between Caledon and Bredasdorp after a R102 million investment by the Department of Transport and Public Works in resealing this road. Roadworks started in May 2015 and are scheduled to be completed by mid-May 2016.

The project includes the resealing of intersections and accesses, structural works on joint bridge repairs, appurtenant works, drainage works, and final sealing. All patch work and sealing work have been completed, as well as the overlay through Napier. At this stage, the contractor is busy with trimming and site cleaning. Road marking started on 25 April 2016.

Motorists travelling on the R316 can expect delays as stop/ go closures for shoulder cleaning will be in operation for the next two weeks.

The project has exceeded its empowerment and employment targets by a long way. Contract expenditure on targeted enterprises so far is R8,5 million, significantly more than the R7,5 million target. A total of 37 932 person-days of work have been created for people living in the Theewaterskloof and Cape Agulhus municipalities, notably more than the 30 000 person-day target.

The Department remains committed to realising its vision of leading in the delivery of government infrastructure and related services. This project helps to give effect to Provincial Strategic Goal 1: “Creating opportunities for growth and jobs”. We will continue to plan, upgrade, rehabilitate and maintain the provincial road network, a valuable strategic asset of the Western Cape Government.
