The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Economic Development and Small Business, Mr Litho Suka, has voiced satisfaction with economic development in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

“As Members we are serious about economic development and poverty alleviation. The kind of work that is ongoing here in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) is satisfying, particularly that investors still prefer to come and invest in the province,” Mr Suka said.

“Coega has a potential to attract even more investors and work should be geared to making that a reality. This is such a diversified field that once fully industrialised will require skills that will contribute to a better life for all South Africans, and make radical transformation of economy a reality,” he said.

Today, the Committees finalised the programme by visiting ASPEN Pharmacare Company in Port Elizabeth. During the week the Committees visited, among other economic development projects, Transnet’s engineering plant in Uitenhage, and the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ).

Mr Suka said through comprehensive incentive schemes the car manufacturing sector which permanently employs a significant number of people could be enhanced.
“The metro is stable, but governance stability has to be sustained and there has to be strong controls if the metro is to become a functioning municipality that will deliver effectively to all its citizens,” he said.
