Essy at the occasion welcomed the new South African envoy, whom he said, was coming at a time of great need when the Commission was making efforts to harmonise its activities and work plan with those of its affiliates and partners. He said he hoped that as he was the representative of the current Chairman to the African Union, his presence would facilitate and provide the necessary linkages needed to achieve the desired objectives.
Essy briefed the envoy on the progress made so far with regard to the implementation of the Durban Summit decisions.
Ambassador Sangqu expressed satisfaction with the work already done by the Commission and reassured the Interim Chairperson of his personal commitment and that of his country in working closely with the Commission and other partners to ensure that the remaining decisions of the Durban Summit and those of the Executive Council were fully carried out.
The South Africa Permanent Representative also used the occasion to deposit the instrument of ratification by his country, of the convention on the prevention and combating of terrorism. The Republic of South Africa thus became the 16th member state of the African Union to deposit the instrument coming immediately after the deposit by the Republic of Ghana, as the convention provides that it shall enter into force 30 days after the deposit of the 15th instrument - Department of Foreign Affairs.
