The Ad Hoc Committee on Police
Minister’s Nkandla report has agreed to proceed with drafting of a
report which the Committee will deliberate on next week Tuesday. The
draft report will be circulated to Committee members for their input
ahead of next week’s meeting.

This decision was taken after the majority of Committee members voted
against a proposal to call the Public Protector and any other witnesses
to appear before the Committee.

The primary mandate of the current Ad Hoc Committee, according to
Committee Chairperson Mr Cedric Frolick, is based on a clear resolution
of the National Assembly which stipulated the Ad Hoc Committee should
consider the report of the Police Minister.

The Ad Hoc Committee received a briefing from the Police Minister on 21
July in Pietermaritzburg and then went on a site inspection of the
President’s private residence in Nkandla on 22 July. The Committee
deliberated on its observations of the Nkandla project against the
Police Minister’s report on 23 July and this resulted in Committee
members unanimously agreeing to call the Minister of Public Works to
respond to some issues which pertained to his department as an
implementing agent of government projects.

Committee members also agreed to recall the Police Minister to respond
to outstanding concerns Committee members had. The two Ministers spent
the whole day in Parliament on 29 July responding to questions from
Committee members.
