‘An estimated 1 800 000 people still die every year because of HIV/AIDS, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa.’1
The government released its five year National Strategic Plan (NSP) to guide South Africa in the fight against HIV/Aids from 2012 till 2016, in Port Elizabeth on World Aids Day; implementation is due to commence in April 2012. Several civil society groups welcomed the new plan and one called it ‘a definitive step away from the dark days of denialism,’ referring to the fact that it is the first plan to emerge in the post-Mbeki and Tshabalala-Msimang period.
