The Pretoria High Court is expected to rule on Friday whether former ANC chairman Terror Lekota's new political party can call itself the Congress of the People, the SABC reported.

Judgment is due to be handed down at 11.30am.

The ruling African National Congress opposed the name of the breakaway party in court earlier this week in front of a full bench which included Judge President Bernard Ngoepe.

The ANC argued that no party or person could exclusively appropriate the name of the Congress of the People, an event in 1955 where the Freedom Charter was born.

But Cope's lawyers told the court that the ANC was simply "running scared" of the new movement and denied that the name would confuse the electorate.

Lekota is scheduled to launch the new party in Bloemfontein next week, alongside former Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa.
