You are cordially invited to a press conference of the ANC stalwarts and veterans (the stalwarts), who are signatories to the document, “For the Sake of our Future”.

The press conference will be held tomorrow, at 14h30, Thursday 31st August 2017.

The location of the press conference will be at the St George’s Anglican Church, 7 Sherborne Rd, Johannesburg, 2193.

As you are aware from previous press releases, the stalwarts include all of the remaining members of those imprisoned after the Rivonia Treason Trial. Comrade Kathrada was the first signatory of the document.

As stalwarts we have been loyal members of the ANC for many decades.

Our objective is to continue to serve all the people of South Africa and ensure the historical values and principles of the ANC are restored. As stalwarts we feel a profound responsibility to the movement and the country, to ensure that the principles and values of the ANC are not destroyed.

We believe that the overwhelming majority of our citizens embrace the values of the Freedom Charter and the Constitution of our country and share this view.

We would like to believe that we speak on behalf of all members of the ANC who reject corruption; want to see the realization of our potential as a nation, and the elimination of poverty and the unacceptable levels of inequality.

Where to now?
· There are less than four months until the ANC’s Elective Conference, where not only will there be elections, but the outcomes of the Policy Conference will be finalised.

· As you are aware after 8 months of discussions with the leadership of the ANC:

o The National Consultative Conference requested by the stalwarts did not take place;

o The National Executive Committee (NEC) was not informed of the stalwarts alternative suggestions about setting aside the first two days of the Policy Conference to review the “concerns of the stalwarts”;

o The alternative proposal by the President of the ANC (and what was the original proposal of the stalwarts) that the National Consultative Conference should be held between the Policy Conference and the Elective Conference was never tabled at the NEC;

o The open letter from the stalwarts to members of the NEC explaining why we were unable to participate in the first two days of the Policy Conference was never circulated;

o To the best of our knowledge no discussions took place in the NEC about the need for a National Consultative Conference after their initial decision in 1996; and

o There are still senior members of the ANC who believe there is no crisis that must be confronted and continue to believe that a National Consultative Conference is not only unnecessary but even raising the question is unacceptable!

· At the ANC’s National Policy Conference (30th June) the Secretary General on behalf of the NEC gave what was termed “a diagnostic organisational report”, despite strong opposition from some delegates.

· The questions we as members of the ANC, supporters and electorate have to ask are:

o Has anything changed, since the Secretary General’s diagnostic organisational report?

o Is the crisis now understood and being confronted?

o What are members of the ANC doing so there is a chance that the trust the majority of the population had in the ANC can be restored?

· As stalwarts we know that you, as the media will also have some difficult questions to ask and as always we will be our best to answer them.

Dear Members of the Media

We realise that you may not be necessarily based in Johannesburg and we will try and facilitate post press conference interviews with you.
