Internationally-acclaimed Intellectual Property practice Adams & Adams has been appointed the official attorneys and associate sponsor of the seventeenth annual Design Indaba. Ravi Naidoo, the CEO and founder of Design Indaba says “This is a first in the history of Design Indaba to partner with a law firm. We are very excited to be able to work with a law firm that appreciates the value of creativity and is focused on protecting the intellectual property of artists, designers and creative minds, on board.”

Attorneys from Adams & Adams will be exhibiting at this year’s Indaba Expo, and will also present a workshop for creatives in all fields wanting to learn how to protect their intellectual property and exploit their creations commercially.

Adams & Adams’ senior partner in Cape Town, Phil Pla says the firm is well versed in championing the cause of the creative mind. “Adams & Adams has been providing legal advice and support to designers and inventors for the last 104 years.

“Creative genius is a rare gift. But do you know how to go about protecting your valuable intellectual property from opportunists looking to make a quick buck off your creative work? Artists, authors, graphic or industrial designers, fashion designers or photographers – creative entrepreneurs must protect their creations,” says Mariette du Plessis, a senior partner in the trade marks department in Pretoria. “If the concept of whether to brand, copyright or register a design is all a trifle blurry around the edges, then this workshop will be the easiest way to figure out what’s right for you. In today’s world, imitation is not a sincere form of flattery - ultimately it’s just a drain on your income and your ability to support yourself. South African creative minds should benefit financially from the time and energy that they spend on a new product, not the copycats in China.

South Africa has incredible creative talents, such as Heath Nash, Tonic Design, Pierre Cronje, Dokter&Misses, Laduma Ngxokolo to name a few. They should be able to create their innovative products and also enjoy the financial benefits thereof.”

Adams & Adams are also the official attorneys to, and sponsors of the Young Creatives Category of the annual Loerie Awards and are passionate about advising creatives. They are also a partner of the magazine industry’s prestigious PICA Awards for excellence in magazine publishing.
