Following Kenya’s election crisis opposition leader Raila Odinga has warned that the country is heading towards a dictatorship and has called for Western intervention, Kenya’s Daily Nation reported Friday.

Odinga, the leader of the coalition opposition National Super Alliance (NASA), called for international partners to intervene during a 30-minute lecture in at the Centre for Security and International Studies, in the American capital Washington DC on Thursday.

Addressing Kenya’s political stalemate, over August’s annulled presidential elections, the questionable rerun on October 26 which is being challenged once again in the Supreme Court, he asked the West to act to guard against what he called extremism and terrorism and ignoring democracy.

“I have come to Washington to convey a simple message: We need a much fuller engagement in the many arms of government that your country possesses to assist the envoys in Nairobi,” he said

“The (American) envoys’ efforts up to now have not succeeded in defusing the crisis. They have sometimes contributed to the crisis,” he said before accusing Western countries of leading Kenya on the path of electoral autocracy and dictatorship.

“Kenya’s is not just an electoral crisis triggered by a third straight stolen election. Let me be blunt: Kenya is hurtling towards an outright dictatorship.”
