The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) and the Transport and Omnibus Workers Union (TOWU) will be embarking on the last round of wage negotiations with Bid Air Services this week. Bid Air Services provides handling services, passenger handling, ramp handling, load control operations and cleaning services, to more than 25 international and domestic airlines flying into South Africa, and at all the major national airports.

Together NUMSA and TOWU make up the majority of unions in the Bargaining council and are the only unions which have the right to negotiate better wages and conditions for workers with the company. On Wednesday we will be holding the last round of wage talks with Bid Air.

Our demands are as follows:
1. We demand a 15 per cent increase across the board
2. We demand that management agree to adjust the salaries of workers who are earning less than R10 000 per month with an additional R3500 per month increase. (The lowest paid worker is baggage handler, earning R4200)
3. We are proposing a two-year agreement. In the first year we propose an 11 per cent increase and 10 per cent increase for the second year (for those earning above R10K)
4. R150.00 shift allowance
5. Guaranteed 13th cheque to all employees employed by the company.
6. Transportation allowance
Bid Air Services has made the following counter offer:
1. Three-year wage agreement
2. The first and second year 6% increase and the 3rd year is 6.5% increase.
3. 13th Cheque.
Our demands are realistic. BidAir has made a fortune in recent years and its senior executive’s earn huge salaries with generous perks. We demand a #LivingWage for all workers. This is why we are demanding salary adjustments for the lowest paid worker who earns less than R10 000 per month. No one can raise their family in dignity on a low salary of R4200 per month. Our members do not receive transport allowance and they work awkward hours. They spend a fortune on transport just to get to work. The directors are rewarded with fancy trips overseas but the working class whose sweat drives the operations continue to languish in poverty.

We will be meeting the management team of BidAir for a final round of negotiations on Wednesday.
