The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) signed a three-year wage agreement with  Kumba Iron Ore yesterday

The NUM wishes to express its sincere gratitude to its members at Kumba for the manner in which they behaved during the negotiation period up until they gave us mandate to sign the agreement.

"Negotiations were very interesting and  this confirm that our members in Kumba still have faith and confidence in the NUM. We are looking forward to service them. NUM is here to stay," said Lucas Phiri, NUM Chief Negotiator at Kumba Iron Ore)

The details are as follows:

Lowest earning current
Basic salary: R5795.00
Housing allowance :R1356.00
Monthly Production: Bonus R1274.00
Shift Allowance: R546.00
Total guaranteed earnings: R8971.00

Year 1
Lowest earning after signing of the agreement
Basic Salary: R6833.00
Housing allowance: R1900.00
Monthly production bonus: R1503.00
Shift allownce: R709.00
Total guaranteed earnings R10945.00

Year 2
Basic Salary: R7516.00
Housing allowance: R2300.00
Monthly production bonus: 1653.00
Shift allowance: R779.00
Total guaranteed earning: R12248.00

Year 3
Basic salary: R8192.00
Housing allowance: R2600.00
Production allowance: 1802.00
Shift allowance: R849.00
Total guaranteed earning: R13443.00

Above all, these earnings members will receive ESOP after every 5 years negotiated by the NUM of which the next payout is in 2016. They will still receive quarterly performance bonus.
 
The NUM and the company have agreed to phase out the entry level in Kumba and move all employees to the next level effective from 01 July 2014.

The NUM is on track to achieve a massive reduction in inequality of pay of workers, with the lowest paid benefiting the most.

This agreement will be effective from the 1st of July 2014 to 30 June 2017
