Kgalema Motlanthe will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 5th Annual JB Marks Educational Trust Fund Award ceremony this evening.
The award recognises his lifetime contribution towards South Africa `s development and democracy .He is honoured for exceptional achievements as a student activist, trade unionist, member of the ANC's military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe during the struggle against apartheid, including being key player in South African political discourse .
He will be the cherry on top in an event to honour excellence from the children of the workers in mining, construction, and energy sectors who through their vision and sweat created the vehicle to breed excellence out of the valley of poverty and the dongas of exploitation.
Top students honoured:
Eighty students will also be honoured for their outstanding academic performance at the event .These students are children of mine, construction , and energy workers and arose from and trying working class background thus their excellence is acknowledged and to further bring hope for the future to workers in mining , energy , and construction .
In this regard “NUM is proud to see that its commitment in changing the living conditions of the working class through intervention in securing access to quality education for such children is bearing fruits of excellence. One great philopher said ‘The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet’ and that is Aristotle” says Frans Baleni , General Secretary of National Union of Mineworkers who is also the Chairperson of the Board that oversees the strategic orientation and interventions of the Fund .
JB Marks Education Trust Fund:
The JB Marks Education Trust Fund is a major source of bursaries for those in the mine, energy and construction industries and their dependants. It assists current workers,disabled, retrenched and retired workers. Mineworkers Investment Trust (MIT) has been the principal source of financial support since the trust fund’s inception in 1997.
