The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is calling on Eskom to reward its 46 000 employees for having worked hard to minimise load shedding in this country.

“We have noted the statement by Chairman Ben Ngubane that the employees played a bigger role in stabilising the power utility’s operational and financial performance, resulting in no load shedding being implemented during this period. As the NUM we are saying this has to be translated into bonus incentive for a work well-done,” said Paris Mashego, NUM Energy Sector Coordinator.

It is not enough for the Chairman to congratulate the workers in passing, to make Eskom look better, without committing any monetary incentives.

We also want to use this opportunity to call on the Chairman to remind Eskom’s CEO Brian Molefe that he must respect and treat the NUM as a stakeholder, and that he should attend strategic forum meetings that are intended at discussing labour related issues.

The NUM is extremely disappointed that Eskom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brian Molefe did not attend the strategic forum meeting this week with the NUM where he was supposed to present the restructuring proposal at Eskom.

The NUM is worried that the restructuring proposal will lead to job losses. The NUM is still calling for an urgent meeting with the Minister of Public Enterprises Lynne Brown to address the restructuring and the sale of Eskom assets.
