Efforts by the Bokone-Bophirima Local Government and Human Settlements to change the lives of ordinary South Africans by providing them with quality and decent houses, continues.

Following the recent detailed inspections of housing projects throughout the Province last week, MEC Collen Maine pledged a 60 sqm, three bedroom room including furniture to Gloria Mokgoto (45) of Jouberton Ext 17 near Klerksdorp in Matlosana local municipality.

Mokgoto, her disabled husband and three children  had been staying in a shack for over ten years. Her massive shack was reduced to ashes following a candle light incident last year, leaving her with nothing. She has since erected another shack albeit smaller.

Mokgoto was identified as a housing beneficiary for the current project but her house will not be the same as that of other beneficiaries.

MEC Collen Maine said “due to harsh living conditions that they live under, it will be proper if we deviate from the 45 meter’s squared as prescript and build them a 60 meter squared to give them a better living space. We will also furnish the house as the family will never afford to buy furniture. This is what government needs to do when necessary to change the lives of our people”.

MEC Maine also instructed that all unfinished housing units be completed as matter of urgency.  This he said, after inspecting some of the houses.

“What we have discovered in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District is the slow delivery in some of the housing projects due to a number of variances such as weather conditions and unavailability of building materials. Although we acknowledge these challenges, we still expect the contractors to deliver on record time”, he said.

MEC Maine began with the campaign in Delareyille, Potchefstroom and subsequently demolished 28 houses in Huhudi near Vryburg, last week. A contractor will be appointed in due course to complete the 300 houses in Vryburg.
