The African National Congress (ANC) will not remove Tshwane's mayor Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, it said on Monday.

"We met today with the regional executive committee and they clarified that there was never an intention to remove the mayor," said ANC Gauteng spokesperson Nkenke Kekana.

Kekana said the party's provincial leadership had expressed confidence in Ramokgopa, after reports of plans to unseat her over alleged mismanagement and maladministration.

It endorsed a decision by the party's municipal structures to recall Ramokgopa and axe city manager Kiba Kekana and mayoral committee members Absolom Ditshoke and Zodwa Masondo.

Kekana said Ramokgopa would soon announce changes to her mayoral committee.

"She will announce changes to the mayoral committee that are necessary, because we want to strengthen local government in Tshwane and ensure that there is an acceleration of service delivery in the metro," he said.

"Irresponsible elements" and members of the opposition had "fuelled the instability" in the strategic metro.

The changes would probably be announced by the end of the week.

Last month, the ANC Youth League called for a change of leadership in the metro, claiming the municipality was in "disarray" and "total collapse".

At the time, Ramokgopa denied that the municipality was in a financial crisis.

The city was recently forced to take out an overdraft of R1,2-billion after it was unable to pay Eskom, Rand Water and others around R700-million for services rendered.

Ramokgopa said the city would have reduced the overdraft to R800-million by December.
