Parliament has set up a special ad hoc joint committee on reparations, which is expected to take forward and conclude the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

The institution announced yesterday the committee would include 19 members of the National Assembly and nine from the National Council of Provinces.

The multi-party committee is likely to meet this week to appoint a chairperson, and will make an initial report to Parliament by June 12.

In a special debate on the TRC's final report in the National Assembly in April, President Thabo Mbeki said about 22 000 apartheid victims would receive a once-off reparations payment of R30 000.

The president also rejected offering a general amnesty for human rights violations by perpetrators who had not applied to the TRC for amnesty.

The African National Congress makes up 16 of the 28 committee members, with three each from the Democratic Alliance and Inkatha Freedom Party, two from the New National Party, and the balance from smaller minority parties. – Sapa.
