A fu rther 180 Chinese troops headed to the war-torn western African state of Liberia on Thursday to join peacekeeping operations there, state media reported.

The members of a transport company will join 60 colleagues who arrived in December, Xinhua news agency said. A 70-strong advance engineering team and 35 medical staff left on Tuesday.

China will eventually send 550 peacekeeping troops in all to Liberia, which installed a transitional government in October to lead the state until general elections in 2005. President Charles Taylor fled to Nigeria in August following 14 years of civil war.

The engineering team, during their one-year mission, will conduct non-military tasks such as building roads and houses, repairing and maintaining airports and ensuring water and electricity supply.

The medical team will serve UN peacekeepers in an eastern city of Liberia.
