There was an urgent need to finalise the implementation of the Older Persons Act, Social Development Deputy Minister Bathabile Dlamini said on Thursday.
"As a caring government we are determined to enhance the recognition of the dignity of older persons and to eliminate all forms of neglect, abuse and violence.
"The successful implementation of the Madrid Plan of Action on Ageing and key legislation such as the Older Persons Act (No 13 of 2006) will require stronger partnerships with civil society and community based organisations."
Dlamini was speaking after a meeting with representatives of the South African Older Persons' Forum in Pretoria on Wednesday.
The Older Persons Act, which came into operation on April 1, aims to maintain and protect the status, well-being, safety and rights of older people.
It also aims to promote their integration in the community by creating an enabling environment and promoting participation in activities with people of other ages and cultures.
At Wednesday's meeting, Dlamini stressed that it was important for the government and social structures to work closely in ensuring that the act and other structures crucial for the development and well-being of senior citizens were implemented.
Also discussed at the meeting, was the official launch of the Older Persons Act next month and the review of funding criteria for facilities housing frail elderly citizens.
