The Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Ms  Susan Shabangu will host 60 girls from  various schools in Gauteng at the Union Building on Thursday 26 May 2016 for the Take A Girl Child To Work Initiative. The 60 girls are symbolic of the 60th Anniversary of the Women’s March to Union Building. Minister Susan Shabangu will be joined by Miss South Africa 2016, Ntandoyenkosi Kunene as well as the CEO of Cell C foundation.

The 2016 Take a Girl Child to Work Day takes place during the year when South Africa is celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the of the 1956 Women’s march to Union Buildings. It also takes place during the month of May which is Africa Month.

On 26 April 2016, the Cabinet noted the continuation of Africa month celebrations for this year, under the theme: “Building a Better Africa and a Better World” as part of the continents celebration of the African Union and the work it has done. The Cabinet also noted that the 2016 Africa Month will focus on women and youth development initiatives, while commemorating the 60th year of the Women’s March and the 40th year of the Youth Uprisings in Soweto.

The partnership with Cell C Take A Girl Child to Work Day® is an opportunity that will be used as a platform to raise awareness on linkages between the 1956 Women’s March, 1976 Soweto uprising as well as the importance of building a better Africa and a better world which will be led by the young people of today.  Minister Susan Shabangu continues to call on the private sector to not only participate in the initiative but to ensure that it is sustainable through additional exposure to the world of work for the girls.

The event will take place as follows:
Date:              Thursday, 26 May 2016
Venue:           Union Building, Pretoria
