The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will release a report on the public perception of biotechnology during a media briefing scheduled for Tuesday, 1 November, in Pretoria.

With the introduction of the Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) Act in 1997, South Africa established a robust system to ensure any activities with GMOs are assessed for potential risks to human health and the environment.

The media briefing will outline developments in the public's awareness of biotechnology, and indicate some of the initiatives being implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to promote awareness, and build confidence in the biosafety system's ability to ensure the safety and sustainability of GMO activities and products.

A key aspect of the country’s National Bio-economy Strategy is coordination of all stakeholders towards successful implementation, coordination of projects across the value chain, and alignment of research, development and innovation with that of industry and government needs.

Time:     10:00-11:00
