The 2004 general election will be held on April 14, President Thabo Mbeki announced on Monday.

Mbeki named the proposed date of the poll at the start of debate on his state of the nation address in the National Assembly.

In coming days the National Assembly and all nine provincial legislatures will have to make a resolution to dissolve.

Most political parties have already kicked off their election programmes. – Sapa.
