Pres ident Thabo Mbeki, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, will depart for Monrovia today to attend the ceremony during which president Charles Taylor will hand over power to his vice-president, Moses Blah.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said that earlier this year, in his capacity as then chairperson of the African Union, Mbeki had been involved in efforts to bring about peace and stability in Liberia.

Today's ceremony is expected to be attended by, among others, the current chair of the African Union, Mozambican president Joachim Chissano and the chair of Ecowas, president John Kufuor of Ghana. – Sapa.
