Title: Mbeki: Eid message
EID MESSAGE BY PRESIDENT THABO MBEKI, 31 January 2004
On the occasion of Eidul Fitr I wish my Muslim brothers and sisters heartfelt Eid Mubarak.
This day of Eid is a day of joy and celebration. And there is much to celebrate and be joyous about. But the day of Eid is also rooted in sacrifice and self-awareness for as we celebrate Eid thousands of South African Muslims are united with millions of global Muslims in the city of Mecca and throughout the world.
In the ritual of Hajj we are reminded of humankind's historic quest for justice and freedom. The pilgrims in Mecca re-enact the desperate fight against poverty until they reach a moment of self-awareness on the Plains of Arafat.
This is similar to our government's commitment to free us from oppression, inequality, hunger, unemployment and all the other conditions that define poverty.
As you celebrate today, also celebrate the many victories we have notched up over the decade. Many more people than ever before have access to water, electricity, housing, education, social pensions and child grants.
Together we can improve the quality of life of all our people.
Eid Mubarak
