Afri can Union chairperson and South African President Thabo Mbeki has condemned the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, yesterday.

The 50-year-old Serbian leader was shot in the parking lot outside his capital Belgrade office, leaving the two million population Serbia nation with neither a prime minister nor an elected President.

The country was last ruled by Mr Slobodan Milosevic, who was overthrown and sent to face trial on genocide charges at the Hague in Switzerland.

According to reports, two assailants shot Mr Djindjic as he got out of his car. He died shortly in hospital.

In his message of condolence, President Mbeki said his administration condemned 'all acts of terror and violence,' saying the country was also mourning the loss.

'Our thoughts and prayers will be with the people of Serbia and Montenegro and in particular with the family of the late Prime Minister during this time of bereavement,' said President Mbeki.

Mr Djindjic is the second European head of government to be assassinated in 17 years following that of the former Swedish Prime Minister Olaf Palme. - BuaNews
