The sanctions against suspended ANC Youth League president Julius Malema will only take effect after mitigation, SABC radio news reported on Sunday.

"You will know that the NDCA [national disciplinary committee of appeal] said that they have a chance to go and mitigate so until such mitigation has taken place the sanctions will not kick in," ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu told the SABC.

"There is another matter which has been raised. It is a matter of comrade Julius' [Malema] case of 2010 because he got a suspended sentence but I think the leadership has decided that there is no particular hurry. Why don't we allow all these matters to be held simultaneously?" said Mthembu.

According to the SABC Malema was attending the ANC's national executive committee meeting in Pretoria as a full member on Sunday.

On Saturday, the NDCA rejected the attempts by Malema, ANCYL spokesman Floyd Shivambu and four others to have their suspension from the party overturned.

They were found guilty in November last year of bringing the ANC into disrepute and of sowing division within the party.

Malema now has a 14-day reprieve to argue for a lesser sentence.
