Long queues snaked out the door at the voting station where ANC delegates were casting their votes on Wednesday for the 80-member national executive committee.

Voting got underway on Wednesday morning and was expected to be completed in the afternoon.

A total of 295 African National Congress members made it onto the voting ballot during nominations on Tuesday evening.

Delegates would go into plenary on Wednesday afternoon to discuss policy recommendations and other issues pertaining to the party.

It was reported that the issue of former ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema would be raised.

Malema sent a letter to the ANC's national conference in Mangaung asking to have his job back.

Suspended ANCYL spokesman Floyd Shivambu said on Monday he, along with Malema and former ANCYL secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa, submitted the letter on Sunday to ask the party to "reverse the outcomes... that culminated in our suspensions and expulsion from the ANC".

In a joint statement, the three said they were willing to behave "appropriately".

Delegates were milling around the University of the Free State campus, where the conference was being held.

Some had secured themselves a patch of grass where they could lie down and take a nap.

Delegates who had been sitting in commissions the past two days said there had not been much change to the policy recommendations proposed at the party's national policy conference earlier this year.
