The number of firearms lost by police officers or stolen from them has increased more than five-fold over a three-year period, Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula said on Tuesday.

In written reply to a parliamentary question, Nqakula said a total of 735 firearms were lost (310), stolen (166), or "not classified as lost or stolen" (259) in 2004/05.

In 2006/07, a total of 3,856 firearms were lost (1,635), stolen (593), or "not classified as lost or stolen" (1,628).

The total figure for 2005/06 was 2,297.

The firearms involved were pistols, revolvers, rifles, or shotguns.

Nqakula was responding to the DA's Ryno King, who asked him, among other things, how many and what types of firearms of members of the SA Police Service were stolen, taken, lost and/or misplaced.

Asked whether any of these firearms had been recovered, Nqakula said 24 firearms had been "accounted for on the PAS as 'lost/found' and has also been accounted for on the asset register" in 2005/2006 and 134 in 2006/2007.

Replying to a further question, Nqakula said the "period 30 April, 2005 to 27 August 2007 reflects a total number of 439 firearms which are still in the possession of members who left the service".
