The group arrived by train from Johannesburg shortly after lunchtime, bearing banners with the slogan "No Land, No Vote".
Many wore the red T-shirts of the Landless People's Movement (LPM) demanding "Land! Food! Jobs!" One of the protesters had a handwritten placard with the words "Mugabe is right".
The LPM's application to hold the march was rejected.
Earlier yesterday, police spokesperson Inspector Percy Morokane said police would allow the march, but would charge the organizers in terms of the Illegal Gatherings Act.
After the group's arrival in Pretoria, police at the station tried to persuade them to settle for one of two alternatives - that a representative of the Presidency be brought to the station to receive the memorandum, or that a group of five LPM members be taken to the Union Buildings to hand it over.
This was, however, rejected, and the march seemed set to continue. – Sapa.
