Iran
's nuclear programme was expected to be one of the issues to be
discussed by Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad and the
Iranian Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Mehdi Mostafavi,
yesterday.
The two were scheduled to meet at the Union Buildings this
afternoon to discuss political and economic relations between their
respective countries, Foreign Affairs said.
Iran has been criticised by the international community for its
announcement that it will resume with its nuclear programme.
The country is being accused by world leaders of being involved in
uranium enrichment for the purpose of building nuclear weapons. But
Iranian authorities have denied this, saying its nuclear programme
was aimed solely at energy creation rather than the manufacture of
nuclear weapons.
Three years of intensive work in Iran by the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) has not yielded conclusive evidence that
Iran's nuclear programme is aimed only at energy creation, head of
IAEA, Mohamed El Baradei told the world-acclaimed magazine,
Newsweek.
Other issues to be discussed yesterday included political
developments within Africa and the Middle East as well as any
"other multilateral issues of mutual interest to both
countries".
Mostafavi is also expected to hold discussions with Acting Foreign
Minister Jeff Radebe.
Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma is currently in
Sudan to attend the African Union Executive Council meeting this
weekend, ahead of the AU Summit of heads of state to take place on
Monday. - BuaNews
