The IFP calls for a comprehensive strategy to combat the scourge of drugs,
comprising a high-profile public education campaign, treatment and
rehabilitation of drug offenders, as well as strict laws and stiff penalties
for those involved in the drug trade after the 2013/2014 Crime Statistics
revealed the prevalence of drug abuse in our communities.

"The prevalence of drugs and alcohol abuse in our communities is extremely
concerning. This tends to promote criminal activity whilst people are under
the influence of drugs or are involved in the drug trade which they see as
very lucrative. If we do not focus on the demand we will never be effective
in combating the supply of drugs. We put a lot of effort in preventing
people from starting to use drugs but we place scant focus on the people who
have an abuse problem," said IFP National Chairperson, Mr Blessed Gwala.

"This country needs a tough stance and use strict laws and stiff penalties
for those involved in the drug trade. Drug traffickers are a major part of
the problem on the supply side. They make drugs available in our communities
and profit from the human misery they help create. This is why tough laws
and penalties are needed as ammunition to fight the drug trade. This will
send a strong deterrent signal to would-be traffickers. We also need an
enhanced vigilance at ports of entry and along our borders," continued Mr
Gwala.

"We further call on the Minister of Police, Nkosinathi Nhleko, to thoroughly
investigate the links between criminals and police. Following the arrest of
an ex-policeman last month in Soweto for allegedly renting out police
uniforms to criminals there must be an ongoing national operation to shut
down organisations dedicated to theft and extortion. This shows how
criminals and their accomplices in the security forces often operate with
impunity to commit criminal activities," concluded Mr Gwala.
