The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal has questioned why KZN Premier, Senzo Mchunu’s
wife, Thembeka Mchunu is not working fulltime in the KwaZulu-Natal Spousal
Office but is occupying two positions, those of being Mayor of uThungulu
District Council and that of First Lady of the province.

"Earlier this year I raised the issue of the Premier's wife being a District
Mayor whilst she should be working fulltime in the Premier’s Spousal
Office.  It is not possible for her to do justice to the people of uThungulu
District, where she is the mayor, and the people of the province at the same
time. When I raised this matter the ANC disputed it, but now it is apparent
they have realised the wisdom of what I said and it is alleged that they
want to remove her as mayor of uThungulu. Premier Senzo Mchunu did not take
action at that time as it related to his wife.  But if the shoe was on the
other foot and an IFP member was involved, the ANC would have commented
about this matter in the Legislature and in the media ad nauseam," said IFP
Leader in the KZN Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala, MPL.

"After carefully considering the workload associated with her two
responsibilities, she must come to the conclusion that she needs to spend
more time fulfilling her responsibilities as the Premier's wife. She has
failed to provide services to the people of uThungulu and she has not
delivered as First Lady of the province. This is totally unacceptable,"
continued Mr Gwala.

"If the Premier has what it takes and wants to display good leadership he
must lead by example and tell his wife that she must vacate her position as
uThungulu mayor and focus on her duties in the spousal office. By continuing
to occupy the mayoral position she is depriving a competent person the
opportunity to lead the District as mayor. She must do the right thing and
resign as Mayor. We cannot allow the situation where some people are
protected because they are married to senior ANC leaders and are therefore
untouchable," concluded Mr Gwala.
