Police intervened to help resolve a tense stand-off between African National Congress and Inkatha Freedom Party supporters at a rally in Emagwaveni near Tongaat, north of Durban yesterday, Director Bala Naidoo said.

One group started throwing stones that slightly injured three people, including a policeman, said Naidoo.

Police were forced to use water cannons to contain the situation.

Naidoo told Sapa that the meeting, planned by the ANC, continued peacefully after police had negotiated with both sides.

"We have a huge responsibility in terms of policing but there is also a responsibility on leaders to ensure there is free political activity," Naidoo said. – Sapa.
