Idasa is concerned about the renewed fighting and recent rebel activity in Eastern Congo, threatening the lives of tens of thousands of civilians and creating renewed refugee problems in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda, further destabilising the region. Idasa calls on foreign involvement in support of these rebels to cease forthwith and on the UN to step up their efforts to protect civilians in Eastern Congo and de-arm rebels.

Idasa appeals to the Government in Kinshasa to make serious work of integrating former rebel elements into the DRC army as per previous agreements in order to avoid a deepening of discontent and the prospect of further rebellions. We call on the MR23 rebels to lay down their weapons and on the African and international community to put pressure on those supporting the destabilisation of the DRC to stop such activity without delay.
