Home Affairs addresses concerns on expiry of Zim permits

The Department of Home Affairs says it has noted recent reports in print and online media on the looming expiration of permits issued to Zimbabwean nationals under the special dispensation period.

The special dispensation was introduced in 2009 to give those Zimbabweans working illegally in South Arica – as a result of the political and socio-economic situation in their country – a chance to regularise their stay.

The department on Tuesday said the permits will expire approximately in December 2014.

Under the dispensation, over 250 000 Zimbabwean nationals were granted four-year work and study permits.

However, concerns have been high among Zimbabweans, who were granted permits under the dispensation, when Cabinet earlier this year announced the upcoming expiration of the permits.

Permit-holders will then be expected to re-apply for permits in Zimbabwe.

Home Affairs has stressed that more clarity will be provided on the process in due course, and a date of commencement of the process will be announced.

“It is not South Africa’s intention to reverse the benefits of the dispensation,” Home Affairs said on Tuesday.

The department said the special dispensation enhanced national security and the management of migration, and helped to mitigate widespread abuse of Zimbabweans – who were in the country illegally – by corrupt employers and officials.

“The department will continue to combat illegal migration, crime, fraud and corruption. It is committed to providing a secured civic and immigration service ensuring all people in the country are safe.”
